YCP Status effective March 30th 2020

Dear Parents,

We have been working around the clock with our teachers, vendors and licensing agency to determine if there is any way that our Center could reopen in a safe manner next week.  However, it is with a heavy heart that I share the news that YCP will be unable to reopen this Monday, March 30th. As we monitor state and national guidelines, we will reevaluate our operating status every week until this crisis is over as it is our intent to reopen YCP as soon as it is safe to do so. Our primary focus has always been to make sure that we are able to serve our families to the best of our ability, and we do not feel confident that we can provide the safest care to your family at this time.

Our goal is to keep our staff on payroll during this interim period so that we are able to reopen for you as quickly and safely as possible. We are asking all families to commit to paying a reduced weekly tuition rate of 70% at this time, we will reevaluate this rate on a weekly basis based on available resources. The more families that are able to contribute, the more prepared we will be to reopen. We are aware of and actively exploring all recently announced government programs for small businesses that could help ease the burden, but access to relief will take time. We are also aware of the potential financial hardships of charging tuition during this time and do not take this situation lightly. We ask any family not able to contribute to contact us directly to discuss your individual needs. We will send a follow-up email by this Friday that will list a few different ways families can pay tuition, but we are working towards a system of electronic/online payments. Please let us know your family's status and intent to remain enrolled by this weekend,

We are a small family-run business who has been serving the community of Vienna for almost 25 years and that has been our greatest honor. We have always tried to be there for our families, but now we are in the difficult position of asking for your help during this unprecedented time. Because we are an independent business, we rely exclusively on our weekly tuition to cover recurring expenses such as payroll, benefits, insurance, utilities, etc. We don’t receive any public funding towards our operating expenses, and absent some form of relief on the part of the VA or Federal Governments, we will be unable to fully cover those expenses. Our most vital expense is payroll because we are not able to operate without teachers. Childcare guidelines are incredibly strict about teachers/child ratios, and for good reason.

While we remain closed, staff will continue to work to provide your children with learning packets and/or art projects to do at home. We are also working on setting up some online applications (Book Reading, virtual Show & Tell, Weekly Song, etc.) We will work to find a safe and timely way to distribute these materials to families. Please look for Teacher emails in the coming week and we thank you for your patience as we try to develop resources for you at home. We will also begin emailing all current families every Friday with a weekly Check-In that will include up to date information, including YCP's Operating Status.

Although there are no easy answers for childcare centers during a Pandemic, we are trying to do our part in helping to prevent the risk of spread in our community and "flatten the curve."

We thank all of our families for their patience and understanding as we navigate this difficult period and we hope that we will all be stronger as a community at the end of it all.

We welcome your thoughts and questions and please be safe and healthy!

Updated Procedures for Coronavirus

YCP is closely monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and is following the guidance of the Fairfax County Health Department, the Center for Disease Control, and the Office of Personnel Management.

In addition to our standard health and sanitation practices, we are implementing a few new guidelines and procedures to keep the YCP community healthy:

When entering school, we ask that you immediately go to the bathroom with your child and wash both yours and your child’s hands or use hand sanitizer pumps located next to the doorways.

We will conduct an additional health check with each child in the morning at drop off. Teachers will take each student's temperature - any child with a fever over 100.4 degrees will not be able to remain at the Center.

If your child develops a fever at school, we will immediately isolate them and call parents (or emergency contacts if we cannot reach a parent) and ask that they be picked up immediately. Children must be free of fever (measured or perceived) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing or symptom-altering medications, such as Motrin or Tylenol before returning to YCP. Depending on the severity/length of sickness, we may ask for a Doctor’s note before returning to the Center.

Staff will also record their own temperatures and will be required to go home if they have any “flu-like” symptoms – staff at YCP receive paid sick leave and are encouraged to use it.

If a parent, sibling, student, or staff member is diagnosed with the COVID-19, the school will immediately close for 14 days – no tuition refunds will be available if this occurs in order for YCP to maintain operations and reopen in a safe manner as soon as possible.

If a parent, sibling, student, or staff member has been exposed, but not diagnosed with the COVID-19, we will close the Center for a 24-hour period for a Deep Clean and the exposed individual will be asked to not return to school for 14 days or until advised that they are safe to do so by their physician.

Any extended closures will be determined by the status of Fairfax County Public Schools and the Federal Government and we will keep everyone updated as the situation changes.

We also ask families to get into the daily habit of assessing wellness at home and to please communicate with us and keep your child home if they develop symptoms. You should contact your medical provider if anyone in your family develops a fever and respiratory symptoms and believe they have been exposed to influenza and/or COVID-19. You should call ahead prior to visiting a healthcare facility if you or anyone in your family has symptoms of influenza (fever/chills, cough, sore throat, muscle/body/headaches, fatigue) or COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath).

Recommended Prevention Measures for COVID-19 include:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer may be used if soap and water are not readily available.

Wash your hands when entering and exiting YCP, before and after meals, after diapering/toileting & taking trash out.

Stay home when feeling sick.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible – wash your hands immediately if you touch your own face or a child’s face.

Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow OR a tissue (immediately throw tissue in trash.)

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces including doorknobs and handles.

Although the influenza vaccine will not protect you against COVID-19, it is still highly recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive this season's influenza vaccine. Cases of influenza (Types A and B) are currently circulating in many communities across the U.S.

The CDC does not recommend individuals who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves against respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. Facemasks should only be used if a healthcare professional recommends it.

We are continuing to follow our regular policies and procedures to help control the spread of infectious diseases, which include:

Washing hands frequently with soap and water using proper hand washing techniques - Handwashing procedures are posted at each handwashing sink.

Routine cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection of toys and surfaces according to the recommended schedule.

Encouraging everyone to follow procedures for covering mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing.

Performing and documenting daily health checks of children every morning. Parents are contacted for any concerning changes in behavior or appearance as they occur throughout the day.

Adhering to our illness exclusion criteria, which are designed, to align with current best practice and research as it relates to controlling the spread of illness within childcare centers and schools.

Providing information via email to families about potential exposure to any unusual level or type of communicable disease. This notification includes signs and symptoms of the disease, modes of transmission, period of communicability, and recommended control measures for both the Center and home.

Coronavirus - We are continuing to receive guidance from the Virginia Department of Health. At this time, we are continuing to focus on prevention of All Viruses because the coronavirus can cause symptoms similar to the common cold, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and feeling unwell. The symptoms that are currently being seen with the current coronavirus infection are fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath. We will recommend the same practices that help to prevent the spread of those common illnesses:

  • Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds - encourage children to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.

  • Parents are encouraged to use the Hand Sanitizers placed around the Center when entering and exiting.

  • Avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible - teach children to use their sleeves or tissues if they need to touch their faces.

  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.

  • Staying home when feeling sick.

  • Covering coughs and sneezes with elbow or tissue, then throw the tissue in a trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

We are ensuring that all bathrooms are stocked with soap and tissue boxes/hand sanitizer are readily available. Additionally, all Staff are advised to stay at home if they feel unwell.

At this time, we will only require children to remain at home if they have a Fever over 100 (orally), Diarrhea and/or Vomiting, Rash WITH additional symptoms, Profuse discharge from Eyes, Ears, or Nose, Open/Wet Sores.

Illness Policy  - As we enter the 2020 Flu season, we will be taking extra precautions to make sure kids and staff stay as healthy as possible. We encourage kids to wash their hands often and ask parents to model this at home as well.

During this season, we will notify ALL parents of a contagious illness, regardless of class to give all families a heads-up. Whenever a case has been determined, teachers will fully sanitize the room, to include surfaces, toys, and linens (among other things.)

Teachers may send home certain supplies more frequently to be cleaned at home like blankets, sippy cups, pacifiers, etc. Please make sure to return these items in a timley manner.

And as always, please make sure to keep us informed if your child gets sick or if anyone in your family has contracted a contagious virus so that we can keep our school community as healthy as possible. As a reminder, you need to keep your child home if they have the following:

  • Fever over 100 (orally), Diarrhea and/or Vomiting

  • Rash WITH additional symptoms

  • Profuse discharge from Eyes, Ears, or Nose

  • Open/Wet Sores

Coronavirus  - We are consulting with the Health Department so that we may stay informed and will convey new information as we receive it. At this time, only persons who have the following symptoms should seek further medical advice:

Welcome to January!

Virginia Department of Social Services Mandated Inspections - The Fairfax County Office for Children conducts multiple site visits over the course of a year to make sure that we are maintaining all regulations and standards.  Our most recent unannounced visit occurred on Wednesday, December 18th. The Inspector spent a total of 2 hours conducting a thorough inspection of facilities, records, and most importantly the staff's interaction and overall care of children. We are very pleased to report that there were ZERO violations to be found and the Inspector was pleased with the activities and interaction he witnessed from the teachers and children. We encourage parents to read the full report which are posted on the Information Boards in both houses. All past Inspection reports can be accessed online through the VDSS website.

Winter Playground Policy - We include Free and Structured outdoor play every day and see this as a vital part of your child's schedule. If your child is not able to participate in outdoor play for whatever reason, we ask that you keep them at home. During periods of extreme cold, playground times may be shortened. Young Toddlers go out once every morning. Children ages 2 and older go out twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Children will remain inside for any active snow showers.

In order for your child to comfortably play outside, they will need the proper attire, to include:

  • Sturdy shoes/boots and socks

  • Hats

  • Gloves/Mittens

  • No Scarves

  • IF there is snow on the ground, you may bring a snowsuit - We are only able to play in the snow if at least 5-8 children (depending on the classroom) have proper cold-weather attire.

All playground visits are at the discretion of the Director and may be modified during extreme temperatures/weather.

Weather-Related Closings & Delays:

YCP follows the Federal Government (OPM) for Closings and Late-Arrival procedures based on Weather and Emergencies. Emails WILL be sent for ALL weather related events.

On the days when YCP has a delayed opening, Morning Snack will not be served. Please make sure your child has been fed before bringing them.

Emergency Closings during a Federal Holiday:

An Independent Decision will be made for any Emergency Closings during a Federal Holiday where YCP is open - this decision will be made no later than 5:30am on the day of.

Do not check the OPM site during Federal Holidays as the status will reflect Normal Operating Procedures and not display Emergency Closures on Holidays.

Weather-Related Early Dismissals:

In the event of Unscheduled Leave, Unscheduled Telework, Liberal Leave, or Early Dismissals the Center will make an Independent Decision guided by the status of OPM and FCPS (Fairfax County Schools) and local Weather Reports. All Early Dismissals will be given with as much advance notice as possible as we understand this to be an inconvenience.

Decisions will always err on the side of safety for our staff and families traveling to and from school. The Center is also mindful of parent’s schedules and will try to remain open for the convenience of our working parents as much as possible - this is the reason we choose NOT to follow FCPS for all closings/delays/dismissals.

For Emergency Closings:

During all other emergency closings, including but not limited to Terrorist Alerts, the Center will observe Fairfax County Public School Procedures.  Please ask to see a copy of our Emergency Preparedness Policies and Procedures at the front desk for further information.

To check YCP’s status during an emergency, please go to:

REMINDER: Closings, Delays, and Early Dismissals will be at the discretion of the Director.

Welcome to September!

Welcome back to Your Child's Place! - we hope everyone had a wonderful summer and we are looking forward to welcoming your children to their new classrooms and getting the year started! We would like to remind seasoned parents and inform new parents about some basic back to school items.

Updated Forms  - Please look for "Updated Contact Information" and "Authorization for Emergency Care" sheets to be placed inside your child's Tote bags next week. Fill out and return by Monday, September 9th. Please indicate on your Updated Contact sheet if you would prefer to NOT be included in the distributed Parent Contact List.

New Tuition rates go into effect the first week of September.

Supplies - All classrooms need the following items by the end of the first week:

  • Box of Wipes

  • Box of Tissues

  • Blanket for Nap

  • Extra set of Clothes (2-3 sets for Infant/Dragonfly/Froggy/Flower/Bumble Bee & 1 set for Ladybug/Grasshopper)

  • Printed Family Picture

Show & Tell - Beginning Tuesday, September 10th, some classrooms will have “Show and Tell,” where we ask your child to bring in an object relating to the Week’s Theme.  Show and Tell items are listed in the Calendar and in the Monthly Activities. Show and Tell is an opportunity for your child to become comfortable with their Verbal and Sharing skills.  Children are also encouraged to listen and take turns during their friends’ presentations.

Please talk to your child about the object they would like to bring in and why - helping them construct a narrative the evening before will give them added confidence during their informal "presentation."

Consider the following criteria, when selecting an object:

  • No Action Figures

  • No Weapons of any kind (Guns, Swords, etc.)

  • No objects that require batteries

  • Must be able to fit into their bag or backpack

  • Be an object that your child does not mind others touching

  • Items will only be shared at the designated time and will remain in your child’s cubby for the remainder of the day

  • Please label all items with your child's name.

Communication - The beginning of the year is quite hectic and we want to make sure that all questions, concerns, and comments are heard. General Information will be provided for each child on their "Daily Info Log" placed in your child's bag to go home. We ask that you do not ask teachers detailed and lengthy questions during pick-up and drop-off as these are very busy times and teachers will not be able to give you their undivided attention. If you are looking for specific information, please schedule a meeting with your child's teacher. We also have Communication Log Books placed in each house, where parents can write down basic instructions and information (if and when your child will be picked up early, details on birthday celebrations, Doctor's appointments, etc.) For immediate concerns, please discuss with Ms. Pashi. She is available to speak at length and in-person from the hours of 9:30 - 12:30 and 2:30- 4:30pm. Or if you would prefer, you may email her at any time with any concerns to pashi@yourchildsplaceva.com. All of this will be covered in the Back to School nights (see below.)

Monthly Newsletters are published here on our YCP Blog, with lots of great information that can be found in the archives. Immediate alerts will be communicated via Twitter @YourChildsPlace while general alerts will be emailed to your inbox.

An Independent Decision will also be made for any Emergency Closings during a Federal Holiday where YCP is open - this decision will be made no later than 5:30am on the day of.

Emails WILL be sent for ALL weather related events. If you are uncertain about a potential delay during school hours, you may call us on the day in question for verification.

Decisions will always err on the side of safety for our staff and families traveling to and from school. The Center is also mindful of parents schedules and will try to remain open for the convenience of our working parents as much as possible - this is the reason we choose NOT to follow FCPS for closings/delays/dimissals.

Welcome to January!

Federal Government Shutdown - We are aware that some families in our Community may be affected by the current Partial-Shutdown. We will be monitoring the situation and if the shutdown continues through the month, we will be making some announcements regarding weekly tuition. If any families have any specifics questions or concerns, please reach out to Ms. Pashi to discuss.

Clothing & Food Drive - We have extended the drive through the end of January and are still accepting donations on behalf of the Patrick Henry Homeless Shelter - boxes are in both houses for the following items:

  • Non-Perishable Food Items

  • Winter Clothing

  • Blankets

Thank you to Ms Patty's daughter Tatiana for arranging and bringing all items to the Shelter!

YCP Closings & Delays - On the days when YCP has a delayed opening, Morning Snack will not be served. Please make sure your child has been fed before bringing them. During severe weather, we always appreciate early pick-ups, so that staff and families may travel safely home.

Weather-Related Closings/Delays:

YCP follows the Federal Government (OPM) for closing and late procedures based on weather. The Center will remain open during liberal leave policies. If you are uncertain about a potential delay during school hours, you may call us on the day in question for verification.

After hours, you can also go to OPM Current Status for up to the minute alerts on the Federal Government's operating procedures.

Change in Policy - An email will be sent for any Delays or Closings as soon as OPM makes the call. Sometimes this occurs early in the morning and sometimes later, we do apologize if a delay or closing is announced after you have left your house. Please check your email before driving to school during all inclement weather.

Emergency Closings during a Federal Holiday:

If there is an emergency closing on a Federal Holiday where YCP is open, all Closings/Late Procedures will be at the discretion of the Director. Decisions will always err on the side of safety for our staff and families traveling to and from school. A decision will be made by 5:30am on the day of.

Parents WILL receive an email stating any closing/delays for these types of unexpected emergencies only.

Do not check the OPM site during Federal Holidays as the status will reflect Normal Operating Procedures and not display Emergency Closures on Holidays.
